The Mako Hotend for Bambu Lab was originally designed to use a high-powered heater, but various factors prevented us from releasing it... until now! With the increased power of the 65W heater, you can expect shorter heat-up times, greater temperature stability, and higher flow rates, especially with larger nozzle sizes and high-temperature materials. The original Mako, using the stock heater, performed well with PLA, but it sometimes struggled with PETG, larger nozzles, and high-temperature materials. This is no longer the case. Not only can you increase the MVS of all materials, but you will also no longer receive temperature errors because the heater cannot keep up. Our default 65W material profiles, found in the Downloads section, are tuned conservatively to reduce the chances of clogs and under-extrusion. Even with our conservative settings, the 65W Mako can shorten print times significantly compared to stock. If you want to push the flow rate faster, the Mako will do it!

The only physical differences between the 65W Mako and the original Mako (which used stock Bambu Lab electronics) are the heater and the removal of the heater adapter. With the 65W Mako, you still get the high-performance aluminum fan, interchangeable nozzles on the hotend itself, and a rigid roll-cage design.

High-flow hotends, such as Mako, have larger melt zones and use more heating power to enable greater flow rates. That being said, achieving consistent performance at high flow rates requires tuning. Mako is designed for experienced users who are comfortable tuning their print parameters, rather than beginners. To get the most out of your Mako, use the material profiles in the Downloads section.

Stock Versus Mako 65W MVS Test (10-50 mm3/s)

Note: For this test, we used OrcaSlicer’s MVS calibration model as the base and created custom g-code to allow the test to be run in both OrcaSlicer and Bambu Studio. OrcaSlicer’s built-in test limits outer-wall speeds and defaults to thick layer lines, making it difficult to accurately demonstrate the Mako 65W’s high flow-rate and speed capabilities. Our custom test increases both print speed and MVS by 1 mm³/s per 1 mm of height, starting at 10 mm³/s (75 mm/s outer wall) and ending at 50 mm³/s (374 mm/s outer wall). Each marked line on the model (not shown in the video above) represents approximately 2 mm³/s of flow-rate change.

The innovative FIN geometry allows the silicone boot to clip onto the nozzle rather than the hot block. Minimal contact between the silicone boot and the hot block improves thermal insulation. Multiple manufacturers, including fan favorites like Bondtech, Diamondback, and Micro-Swiss, offer their best nozzles with FIN geometry. Nozzles using the FIN Standard can be easily swapped using our Nozzle Torque Wrench™.

Designed with our patented “roll cage” design, the heat sink connects to the hot block with a rigid tubular structure. Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different than the previous Mako Hotend for Bambu Lab?

The biggest change is the new 65W heater, which provides significantly more heating power than the previous version. This allows the Mako to maintain temperature at higher flow rates and perform better with larger nozzles and high-temperature materials. The 65W Mako also eliminates the need for the heater adapter used in the previous design. Otherwise, it retains the same core Mako design, including the high-performance aluminum fan, rigid roll-cage, and interchangeable nozzle system.

What makes this hotend different from competitor hotends?

The Mako combines increased heating power, a larger melt zone, and an integrated flow diffuser to enable high-flow performance. Its interchangeable nozzle system also lets you change nozzle sizes or materials without replacing the entire hotend, giving you more flexibility to configure your printer for different applications.

Can I use RepRap/V6 style nozzles with it?

Unfortunately, RepRap nozzles are not compatible with Mako. 

Instead, the Mako Hotend includes and uses nozzles with our new FIN nozzle standard. Nozzles with FIN's innovative nozzle geometry completely interlock with silicone boots, which helps to insulate the hotend and protect it from cool air and plastic.

Will we be able to increase the maximum temperature of the hotend?

At this time, you'll not be able to increase the maximum temperature of the hotend, as that is set in the firmware of the printer.
